What Does a Relationship with God Look Like?

In the Gospel of John, one of Jesus’ closest followers recounts a meaningful passage from Jesus’ teachings:

“… soon … you will ask the Father in my name. I’m not saying I will ask the Father on your behalf, for the Father himself loves you dearly because you love me and believe that I came from God” (John 16:25-27 NLT).

In this passage, Jesus assures us that we can approach God directly, using His name as a bridge. God loves us because we love His Son, Jesus, and He will always respond when we come to Him in Jesus’ name. Sometimes His answer may be “Yes,” at times it may be “No,” and other times He might say “Wait,” but He never ignores those who sincerely seek Him through Jesus.

These words aren’t just theoretical—they are affirmed by countless personal experiences. Over and over, I hear from Christians who, after asking Christ for forgiveness and committing to follow Him, witness a profound transformation in their lives. (You can find some of their testimonies on the “Listen to Life Stories” page of our website.)

Once you establish your relationship with God, you can expect to be transformed into His likeness. You’ll become more aware of spiritual realities, sensing God’s presence and His guidance. Sometimes, God may communicate with you—not typically through an audible voice, but by making His presence known or through a message He wants you to understand. This might happen while reading the Bible, praying, or during a church service. When He speaks, it can profoundly change the course of your life.

“But whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like Him as we are changed into His glorious image” (2 Corinthians 3:16-18 NLT).
